THE RARE HISTORY OF PINK SEA GLASS

Pink is an extraordinarily rare sea glass colour, with finding a single piece estimated at just 1 in every 1,000 pieces collected.

Pink glass was occasionally produced for Depression-era tableware using selenium, but most pieces are "sun-colored" glass. Between 1915 and 1930, selenium was added to clear glass mixtures to remove green iron tints. Over decades, intense UV radiation from sunlight slowly alters the atomic structure of the selenium, turning the glass a radiant, delicate pink. Because arsenic replaced selenium around 1930, this atomic reaction makes it possible to date this pink marble as over 100 years old.
