THE STORY & OCEAN HISTORY

Thick, heavy, and full of historical intrigue, this rare black sea glass shard features a distinct surface marking and a gentle curve on its back—telltale signs of a hand-blown 18th or early 19th-century glass bottle. Cradled in solid recycled sterling silver with a rich, dark oxidised finish, it forms a rugged, unisex ocean talisman for sailors, surfers, and wild swimmers alike.

THE RARE HISTORY OF BLACK 'PIRATE' GLASS

Black glass—known to collectors as pirate glass—is exceptionally rare, accounting for roughly 1 in every 2,500 pieces of sea glass discovered.

On the shoreline, these pieces resemble smooth black stones, but holding them up to direct sunlight reveals their true, hidden hue—typically an exceedingly dark olive green or deep amber. Popular from the 1700s through the mid-1800s, iron salts were added to create extra-durable, thick-walled vessels to protect light-sensitive medicines and spirits from UV damage. Small trapped air bubbles ("seeds") indicate an antique, hand-blown origins dating pre-mid-1800s.
