THE STORY & OCEAN HISTORY

Carried by Atlantic swells and worn by coastal tides over centuries, this rare near-round black sea glass marble displays authentic C-shaped hydration marks—the unmistakable signature of centuries in the ocean. Framed in a rugged, textured sterling silver setting inspired by rocky shores and bubbling sea foam, this dark ocean talisman offers a striking, unisex piece of Cornish history for sailors, surfers, and wild swimmers.

THE RARE HISTORY OF BLACK 'PIRATE' GLASS

Black glass—affectionately known to collectors as "pirate glass"—is exceptionally rare, accounting for roughly 1 in every 2,500 pieces of sea glass discovered.

On the shoreline, these pieces appear as smooth black stones, but holding them to direct sunlight reveals their true, hidden hue—typically an exceedingly deep olive green or rich dark amber. Popular from the 1700s through the mid-1800s, iron salts were added to the glass mix to create thick, extra-durable vessels that protected light-sensitive spirits and medicines from sun damage. Tiny air bubbles ("seeds") trapped within the glass indicate an antique, hand-blown piece, dating this historical treasure pre-mid-1800s.
